A €2 million contract has been awarded for a major road improvement scheme on the N63 in County Roscommon, with works set to upgrade almost 3km of the route between Mount Talbot and Athleague.

Roscommon County Council has appointed Elphin company Hanly Quarries Ltd to carry out the project, which will involve the rehabilitation and resurfacing of approximately 2.9km of the national road.

The contract, awarded following a competitive tender process, is valued at €2.14 million excluding VAT, with a duration of one year.

The scheme is aimed at addressing significant deterioration along the route and will involve extensive pavement reconstruction, drainage improvements and a range of road safety measures.

More than 5,000 square metres of damaged carriageway will be excavated and rebuilt, while over 17,000 square metres of road surface will be renewed as part of the works.

Council engineers identified a number of locations where the road structure has failed and requires substantial repair rather than simple resurfacing.

The project is intended to improve driving conditions, enhance road safety and reduce future maintenance requirements on the route.
