Uisce Éireann has commenced essential upgrade works to replace more than 5km of ageing water mains in Cloonfad, delivering a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses.

The works will address a series of disruptive bursts that have impacted the local community in recent years, helping to restore confidence in the local water supply and support the community into the future.

As part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, the works between Cloonfad and Lowberry Cross will strengthen the local network and directly tackle recurring burst issues.

This significant investment in the area will deliver a more secure and dependable water supply for the community, supporting homes, businesses and future growth.

The project will benefit customers in Cloonfad and surrounding areas, including Meeltraun, Clogher Upper, Derrylahan and Ballinross, Moigh Lower, Tonregee and Mount Delvin, as well as those connected to the Johnstown/Levalleyroe Group Water Scheme.

Marking the commencement of the upgrade works, Enda Mac Namara, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “We’re delighted to have commenced these essential works in Cloonfad. We understand how frustrating ongoing bursts and disruptions have been for local residents and businesses, and these works are a direct response to those challenges. This investment will make a real difference to daily life in the area by providing a more reliable water supply. We appreciate the patience and support of the community as these works continue.”

The project will be delivered by Farrans Construction and will be complete by spring 2027. As part of the upgrade, lane closures with traffic lights will be in place on sections of the R327 to allow construction to be carried out safely. Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates.

If short-term planned water disruptions are required, customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice before any interruption.
