An Post confirms amalgamation of Ballyhaunis and Castlerea

An Post has confirmed outline plans to amalgamate its mail operations in Ballyhaunis and Castlerea. The amalgamation has been met with some concern as Ballyhaunis office serves large areas of West Roscommon including Cloonfad and Ballinlough.

A spokesperson said the amalgamation was part of “An Post’s ongoing investment in, and planning for, the future of the mail’s infrastructure in the region”.

“In all, forty-seven staff, twelve from Ballyhaunis and thirty-five from Castlerea will jointly work from An Post’s current delivery office in the Castlerea Business Park,” the spokesperson said. “It is likely that the staff compliment at the newly unified base will increase as a result of the merger. The move is likely to take place in the second quarter of 2026.

“All postal staff begin and end their working day in Castlerea while conducting their local deliveries throughout as normal.” He added that Castlerea was also the base for twenty of An Post’s rapidly growing electric vehicle fleet, part of the largest EV fleet in the country.

“The site has been fitted out for further EV post vans to be pressed into service throughout the Northwest,” he said. “The move is part of the ongoing transformation of the mail business prompted by the growth in e-commerce and home.”
