An Post confirms retention of services at Town Post Office for time being only

An Post has confirmed this evening in a statement that it will appoint a postmaster to take over the running of Roscommon post office in the current premises at The Square.

The company said that “in the coming days” it would seek expression of interest for a “partner postmaster” to run the post office. However, it is unclear at this stage what the nature of the contract will be or its duration.

The statement provides no clarity on exactly how long the landmark building will continue to be used for post office services but indicates its "future use" would be explored.

In the nuanced statement, An Post said it would “immediately begin exploring the most advantageous future use of the post office building” to support the future development needs of Roscommon town”.

“We will work with and in consultation with the local authority and other interested parties to this end,” the statement said.

The final paragraph in the An Post statement is the most nuanced of all, suggesting that the post office building will have another use at some point in the future. 

“The building will not be left vacant. There is a unique opportunity for the community to have both a new and more modern post office, contributing to the regeneration of the town centre providing the full suite of post office services in addition to either a new community facility in the town centre," concluded the statement.

The Roscommon Herald is awaiting a response from An Post to a series a queries seeking clarification on elements of the statement.
