An Post invited to address special council meeting on disputed post office changes 

A senior manager from An Post is being invited to address a special council meeting set for this Thursday, February 1st to discuss the controversial relocation of post office services which will see the closure of the Roscommon Town Post Office.

A campaign is now underway to prevent the closure of the landmark Post Office building in The Square.

A large turn out of councillors and all five local Oireachtas members attended a meeting in Gleeson’s Townhouse yesterday evening (Monday) to discuss the issue which is causing widespread anger locally.

Following yesterday’s meeting, its organiser Independent Cllr Tony Waldron told the Roscommon Herald that it was agreed to invite a member of An Post senior management to a special council meeting this Thursday, February 1st at 6.30pm to address members on the controversial plans. It's understood that Oireachtas members will also be in attendance.

Cllr Waldron also outlined that local Independent TD Denis Naughten is set to table a question in the Dail on the matter later this week for the relevant Minister, Jack Chambers.

An Post announced late last week that the services at the post office in The Square, currently run directly by the company, will be replaced by a contractor run operation. A company spokesperson said “it was likely that a new location for the services would be sought by the new postmaster”.

It’s understood that the An Post tender for the new contract will be advertised in the coming weeks with the process expected to be completed over the next three months.

A spokesperson for An Post confirmed that the landmark building on The Square would be put up for sale following its likely move to a new location.
