An appeal has been made to motorists to avoid leaving their cars parked on the streets of Boyle all day as it is causing a decline in spaces for customers coming into the town.

Cathaoirleach of Boyle Municipal District Cllr Sean Moylan, speaking at a recent meeting, said that people are parking on the street to avoid paying parking fees at the train station and this is a problem especially on Elphin Street.

He also appealed to workers not to take up spaces as customers coming into the town are unable to find parking and this is having an effect on local business.

In his motion before the members he called on Roscommon County Council to install eight to ten ‘two -hour parking’ places on Elphin Street and Main Street. He said, “there is a huge problem on both of these streets with long-term parking, and this is having a negative effect on business and householders on these streets. This has worked very well in Roscommon Town and would answer a lot of issues.”

He told the meeting “people are parking on the street and going to the train station. They are parking there all day long. It is frustrating for people coming into town.” He said he was trying to “keep the lights on in businesses”.

Roscommon County Council said, “Boyle area office will look at the proposal with the Road Safety Section to assess the requirements and most suitable locations.”

Cllr Moylan welcomed this response saying he was proposing the two-hour limit in order for “the town to run smoothly.”

Cllr Valerie Byrne added, “we want to bring the centres of our towns back to life and we won’t do that without parking.”

Cllr Tom Crosby also added that parking “was critical to progress and develop any town. Business employees who park on the streets all day, that is also a negative. It is critical we sort out parking.” “One of the great things in our county is free parking and we fought hard to keep that. This is a glitch that comes with that,” concluded Cllr Crosby.
