One of Roscommon’s most famous sons has congratulated his fellow actor Cillian Murphy on his fantastic Oscar success.

Last night, Cillian Murphy became the first Irish-born star to win an Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer in the biopic about the father of the atomic bomb.

Mr Murphy has also won a Golden Globe, a Bafta and a Screen Actors Guild award for his starring role in 'Oppenheimer'.

The 47-year-old, who was born in Douglas, Cork, said he was “overwhelmed” by the award and that he is “a very proud Irishman”.

Among the many people who congratulated Mr Murphy was Boyle man and actor Chris O’Dowd.

“So delighted for that brilliant lad of Cork,” Chris wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Over 25 years of gorgeous work, bualadh bos Cillian, we’re all so proud of ya.” He also shared a hilarious picture of the two men, "saying I’ve always had the pins of a much slimmer man".
