The Roscommon ladies team will be honoured at a civic reception later this year following their All-Ireland IFC success in Croke Park.

Tabling the proposal at the September meeting of Roscommon Municipal District, Independent councillor Michael Holland said it had been a fantastic year for ladies football in the county.

He said it was a unique occasion where two Roscommon ladies team won All-Irelands, referring to the achievements of both the intermediate and U-16 teams.

Referring to the All-Ireland success in Croke Park, Cllr Holland said the ladies delivered a polished performance and congratulated everyone involved, including the players from his own club, St Croan’s.

The proposal for a civic reception was seconded by Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice, who said that ladies football in the county was in “a very strong position”. He said it was a fantastic achievement by the players and management, noting with pride that he had a niece on the team. “It was a great day for football in County Roscommon,” he said.

Fianna Fáil councillor Larry Brennan said he wanted to be associated with the previous sentiments. He said the way the players had conducted themselves as they travelled across the county with the cup was a huge complement to them and management.

“It was a fantastic achievement and they are a credit to the county,” he said.

Fine Gael councillor Ruth Conboy congratulated all involved and said she would also like to be associated with the previous comments.

It was also agreed at the meeting that Roscommon County Council would honour the Roscommon U-14 camogie team, who won an All-Ireland title, at the next civic reception. It was proposed and seconded by Cllrs Fitzmaurice and Holland.

At the MD meeting, Fianna Fáil councillor Larry Brennan also proposed that a number of outstanding individuals and groups from across Roscommon be honoured at the next civic reception in recognition of their national success.

Among those nominated for recognition were several students from Roscommon Community College.

The school’s Transition Year Drama Group enjoyed success on the national stage with their production of Eclipsed. The students were crowned All-Ireland champions, securing an impressive haul of awards including Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Set, and Best Stage Crew, in addition to taking first place overall.

Cllr Brennan told the MD meeting that the scale of the achievement made the group particularly deserving of civic recognition, noting that their success brought immense pride to the school, the local community, and the wider county.

Also proposed for honour were Roscommon Community College students, George and Isaac Naughton, who earned national acclaim at the Student Enterprise Programme National Final. The brothers received a Special Achievement Award for their project Beo go Deo, highlighting their innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit.

Further recognition was suggested for a group of TY students from the school, who excelled at the GLOBE Ireland Student Sharing and Awards Ceremony in TU Dublin. The students secured five national awards: Best GLOBE Project Overall; Best Presenters; Outstanding Scientific Inquiry; Best Community Engagement and Best Rainfall and Flooding Project.

Beyond the educational sector, Cllr Brennan also proposed honours for several individuals who achieved All-Ireland success in their respective fields.

He nominated that Gemma Casey of the St. Dominic’s GAA Club be recognised following her achievement in becoming the Scór na nÓg All-Ireland champion in solo singing.

Vincent Pierse of Ballymurray was proposed as another nominee after being crowned All-Ireland Champion in storytelling at the All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil.

Cllr Brennan also proposed that Thomas Higgins of Roscommon Golf Club be nominated for a civic reception following his victory in the Irish Close Amateur Golf Championship.

Meanwhile, at a meeting of the Athlone Municipal District, Cllr Emer Kelly proposed that the council honour the U-15 Four Roads Ladies Football team and the Roscommon LGFA U-16 team at the next civic reception.

Four Roads team won the Division 4 Shield at the National Féile Peile na nÓg finals , hosted by Derry GAA at Sleacht Néill GAA club on June, while the Roscommon LGFA U-16 team won the 2026 All-Ireland B Championship by beating Laois in July.

The proposals by Cllr Kelly, who is the Cathaoirleach of the Athlone MD, were agreed by her South Roscommon colleagues.

Isaac and George Naughton were presented with a Special Achievement Award at this year’s Student Enterprise Programme national finals.
