Sinn Féin TD Claire  Kerrane was formally selected last night as the party's General Election candidate in Roscommon-Galway.

Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane was formally ratified last night, Thursday, as the party’s sole Roscommon-Galway candidate contesting the next General Election.

The Tibohine native was officially selected at a party convention in Hannon’s Hotel, Roscommon Town.

Deputy Kerrane was elected as a new TD in 2020 when Sinn Féin secured a spectacular gain in that year’s General Election.

The 32-year-old became the party’s first TD in the constituency since the election of George Noble Plunkett in the famous North Roscommon bye-election "of the snows" of 1917.

Speaking last night after the convention, the TD said she was honoured to be selected by members of Roscommon and Galway Sinn Féin to run in the next General Election.

“Thank you to Michael Mulligan for proposing me and Cllr Dermot Connolly for seconding my nomination.

“I made a promise to the electorate in 2020 to work hard and do my best. I’ve given this role everything, it’s been my number one priority for the last four years and I’m very proud to have helped people and made a difference - there is no greater reward.

"I haven’t got everything right but I’ve done my best. On Election Day, it’ll be over to the electorate,” she said.

Deputy Kerrane is the party's spokesperson on children.
