Castlerea councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice has decided he will not contest the Fianna Fáil selection convention for a place on the party ticket at the next General Election in Roscommon-Galway.
Confirming his decision to the Roscommon Herald, Cllr Fitzmaurice, who is the current Council Cathaoirleach, said: "I am very thankful for the honour of being nominated for the Fianna Fail convention and I am very grateful to all those who have nominated me for the convention.
“I have decided that I will not contest this convention. I will continue my role as a county councillor to help improve the lives of all the people in my area and all of the citizens in County Roscommon.”
Senator Eugene Murphy and Dr. Martin Daly have already confirmed their intention to contest the convention for a place on the party’s General Election ticket.
Cllr John Keogh and Malachy Hand, the other two people who have been nominated by party members, also have to decide whether they accept the nomination, and formally put their name forward for selection.
The convention takes place next Thursday, October 3rd in the Abbey Hotel, Roscommon Town.
