Ballinagare Community Centre has received the go-ahead for a major development, which incorporates a single storey extension to the front of the building and a multi-use sports court.
Roscommon County Council recently granted permission for the extension along with the provision of a new multi-use games area (MUGA) sports court with fencing and lighting.
The new sports court will be used to accommodate various different sports, such as hockey, five-a-side football, netball, basketball and tennis.
The project includes a new court for padel tennis with fencing and lighting, which will be 20 metres in length and 10 metres in width in accordance with the International Padel Federation regulations.
A mix between tennis and squash, padel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and is a game for all ages and abilities.
The planning documents note that the MUGA will comply with Department of Education regulations.
The new extension to the front of the existing community centre will comprise a reception centre, ladies club and men’s shed.
The plans also incorporate a new sensory garden, car parking - including two disabled car park spaces - landscaping, lighting, signage and ancillary works.
The existing site located in the West Roscommon village is home to a 714 square metres community centre. The rest of the site is made up of tarmac and an undeveloped green area where the new development will take place.
Ballinagare Community Centre is a community-run centre for the village and surrounding area. The building currently contains a gym, sauna, canteen, office, meeting room as well and ladies’ and gents' toilets and changing facilities.
