A County Roscommon GAA Club has this afternoon paid tribute to a former player, manager, official and friend, praising him for his “genuine commitment” to the club and its future.

Kilbride GAA Club said that throughout his life, the late Ciarán Murray, Ballinderry, Fourmilehouse, who passed away peacefully on Friday, surrounded by his family, at Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, was a man whose character spoke louder than words.

Beloved son of the late Michael (Mike) and brother of the late Claire. He will be deeply missed by his heartbroken partner, Liz; mother, Phil; brothers, Michael, Joe, Aidan and Tom; sister, Caitriona; nieces, Claire, Erin, Emma, Sarah, Rachel and Hannah; nephews, Eoghan and James; sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins and a wide circle of friends.

Reposing at Smyth’s Funeral Home, Roscommon on Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. Mass of the Resurrection in St Brigid’s Church, Fourmilehouse on Monday morning at 11.30 a.m.. Burial afterwards in Ballinderry Cemetery.

Kilbride GAA described him as “a proud Kilbride man and one of our club’s most loyal and valued servants. Known affectionately to many as Hack, Ciarán gave an enormous amount to Kilbride GAA throughout his life, both on and off the field. His passing leaves a great sadness within our club and community, and he will be remembered with great affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

He was a member of the Kilbride team that won the junior championship and was also part of the subsequent intermediate team of the late 1990s. He went on to be a member of the historic Kilbride senior team of 2000, a team that holds a special place in the club’s history. “It was fitting that Ciarán was able to enjoy the anniversary and reunion of that team in October 2025, reconnecting with friends and sharing memories of a very special time in the club’s journey,” said the club.

On the field, he was described as “a solid and tough defender”, playing at wing back and corner back.

“He was never one to back down from a challenge and always gave everything for the Kilbride jersey. He was a fierce competitor who was occasionally susceptible to the odd yellow card! Those who played alongside him will remember his commitment, his determination and the pride he took in lining out with his teammates and representing the club,” added the club.

His contribution to Kilbride did not end when his playing days were over. He continued to give of his time, managing the Kilbride senior team in 2010 and 2011 and coaching the junior team. He was also heavily involved with a number of juvenile teams, both boys’ and girls’ football, working alongside his brother Michael and brother-in-law John. “His willingness to help out and give his time to the next generation of players was another example of his genuine commitment to the club and its future,” said the club.

Away from the field, he was equally dedicated to the running of Kilbride GAA. He served as club treasurer from 2000 to 2004, taking on an important responsibility during a significant period in the club’s history. He was also heavily involved in the club Lotto and numerous fundraising initiatives. “These jobs often happen quietly in the background, but they are vital to the running of any club. Ciarán was always willing to play his part, giving his time and energy to help Kilbride continue to grow and prosper.

“Throughout his life, Ciarán was a man whose character spoke louder than words. His positivity, easy-going nature and good humour made him a dependable presence and a great person to be around. He had a genuine interest in people and was always good for a chat, a laugh or a bit of banter. He was a man who never had a bad word to say about anyone, and his ability to make people feel welcome was one of his greatest qualities. No matter where he was, his company was always enjoyed, and his presence will be sorely missed,” said the club.

“Over the past year, Ciarán faced his illness with great dignity and courage. Throughout that difficult time, he remained true to the qualities that had always defined him. His strength, positivity and quiet determination were an example to those around him, and the dignity with which he faced his illness will remain part of our lasting memory of him.

“Kilbride GAA extends its deepest and most heartfelt sympathies to Ciarán’s family, his partner Liz, his friends and all those who loved him at this very difficult time. We hope they can find some comfort in the knowledge that Ciarán was held in such high regard by everyone in the club and will always be remembered with great affection by the entire Kilbride community.

“He leaves behind a wonderful legacy of loyalty, friendship, hard work and a genuine love for Kilbride GAA. The memories, the stories and the laughter he shared with so many will live on for years to come. He gave a great deal to our club and community, and we are all the better for having known him,” concluded the club.
