Founded in 1986, the family-run garden centre has grown from modest beginnings into one of the region’s most respected horticultural destinations. Over four decades, it has built a reputation not only for quality plants and expert advice, but also for its strong sense of community and commitment to promoting gardening as a source of wellbeing.

The anniversary event reflected those values, offering visitors an opportunity to look back on the garden centre’s journey while celebrating the relationships it has cultivated with gardeners across the west and beyond.

Large crowds gathered throughout the day, underscoring Ardcarne’s enduring popularity and the affection in which it is held locally.

The highlight of the celebrations was a keynote address by renowned author and storyteller Michael Harding.

In a thoughtful and engaging talk, Harding explored the deep connections between people and plants, drawing parallels between gardening and life itself. He spoke about patience, resilience and memory, and how gardens act as living records of the passage of time, shaped by those who care for them.

Music added to the warm atmosphere as James Wickham, accompanied by an ensemble of musician friends, provided a soulful soundtrack to the occasion. Their performance helped create a festive yet reflective mood, resonating with visitors who had come to mark the milestone.

Staff at Ardcarne Garden Centre said they were overwhelmed by the response.

“To see so many people come together to celebrate our history was incredibly special,” a spokesperson said. “Hearing Michael Harding’s words and enjoying the music made it a day we will always remember. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has supported us over the past 40 years.”

The anniversary celebrations served as a reminder of the role Ardcarne Garden Centre has played in the life of the community – not just as a place to shop, but as a space for learning, connection and shared experience.
