Several units of the fire service are currently at the scene of a large forest fire in the Gorthaganny area of West Roscommon.

The fire, which broke out earlier this afternoon, is covering a large area and is continuing to spread as it is fanned by strong winds.

Plumes of smoke, up to 1,000 feet in height, can be seen for several miles in the West Roscommon area.  It is understood that already up to 40 acres of forestry may have been destroyed.
