Roscommon-Galway Independent Ireland TD, Michael Fitzmaurice, will decide this week on what constituency he will contest in the forthcoming general election.

Since the Roscommon-Galway constituency was redrawn, there has been speculation that Mr Fitzmaurice might run in Galway East.

Mr Fitzmaurice was first elected to the Dáil in 2014 and topped the poll in 2020. Under the new boundary, a population of 16,330 in 32 County Galway electoral districts in the constituency of Roscommon-Galway were transferred to Galway East.

Speaking to the Herald on Monday, Deputy Fitzmaurice said that a meeting is planned either tonight, Tuesday November 5th, or Wednesday to finalise the matter.

“There are a few different scenarios we can go through,” said Deputy Fitzmaurice.

“The bottom line is if I moved constituency, I would be taking a huge risk. To be honest about it, I would be putting my political future on the line if I moved,” he said.
