Football rivalries of Roscommon, Mayo and Galway put aside for spectacular wedding

The football rivalries of Roscommon, Mayo and Galway were put aside on Friday when a County Roscommon native and Galway footballer married the love of her life - a Mayo footballer.
Charlotte Cooney, who grew up in Castlerea, where her mother Pamela (nee McDonagh) is a wedding dress designer, running the renowned Dinagh Modes, and her businessman father Barry is originally from Tibohine (Cooney's Hardware), married Mayo footballer Stephen Coen in a spectacular ceremony.
Wearing a wedding dress designed by herself and handmade by her mother, Charlotte wowed the guests at the black tie ceremony. Pamela also designed and made all the bridesmaids dresses, the flower girls dresses and of course the mother of the bride outfit.
The happy couple tied the knot at the four-star Johnstown Estate on Friday, following the wedding ceremony at St. Mary’s Church, Broadford, County Kildare.
Stephen Coen from Hollymount, son of Liam and Mary Coen, is best known for his exploits on the field, winning All-Ireland titles at minor and U-21 level with Mayo.
He is also a two-time Connacht football champion with the seniors, winning the provincial title in 2020 and 2021.
Charlotte, meanwhile, who grew up in Castlerea, boasts a decorated camogie and football CV with Galway. She was part of the team that got to the All-Ireland football final in 2024, ultimately losing to Kerry.
She helped her club Claregalway win an All-Ireland intermediate club football title in 2013. That team was captained by her sister Fabienne, who was chief bridesmaid for Charlotte on her big day.
The couple got engaged in 2023 while travelling in South-East Asia.
