Stella Maris, a former nursing home on the Roscommon Road in Baylough, Athlone, is set to accommodate International Protection Applicants in the near future, it has emerged.

A Department of Integration spokesperson has confirmed to the Roscommon Herald that a new accommodation centre is coming on stream at the building which “will accommodate families seeking international protection”.

The spokesperson said that the former nursing home has capacity for 60 people “and will be ready for new arrivals shortly”.

Stella Maris operated as a nursing home for 35 years but closed in 2022 due to spiralling costs.
