Fundraiser for County Roscommon man a massive success
Much loved Taughmaconnell man, Val Keogh.
More than €26,000 has been raised for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) on behalf of a County Roscommon man.
Last Saturday, there was a huge turnout to support the Taughmaconnell Community 5km Walk/Run for local man Val Keogh. In 2025, Mr Keogh was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) and the community has rallied behind him.
To date, €26,025 of a €30,000 target has been raised, and the organisers have thanked everyone who has supported them.
A much loved and respected member of the local community, Val is one of Skyvalley Rovers FC’s long serving members and is respected throughout the Roscommon and District Football League.
He has made an outstanding contribution to the club. As a player, he was an excellent centre-back during one of its most successful periods and represented Skyvalley at every level. He later managed numerous underage teams and continues to support the club with its under-16 boys.
He has also served as treasurer, secretary, groundsman and referee, giving countless hours to the club and the wider football community.
“Val has spent his life quietly giving his time, energy and support to others. A lifelong sportsman and dedicated member of the community, his contribution has been immense,” the campaign said.
“From his early teenage years playing with Skyvalley Rovers, to his involvement as a coach and referee, Val has always been willing to give his time to help others. His love of sport, his community spirit and his willingness to lend a hand have touched so many people over the years.
“Val has also always had a deep love for the outdoors and the environment, planting hundreds of trees and dedicating much of his time to causes close to his heart. He has travelled abroad on several occasions to help build orphanages in Russia, Belarus and Ethiopia.”
Late last year, Mr Keogh was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. While the illness has already taken away his ability to play the sports he loves, “it has not changed the person he is or his desire to help others,” the campaign said.
“Val has volunteered to take part in a drug trial, knowing that while it may not change the outcome for him, it could provide vital answers and hope for others living with MND in the future. Now, the community that Val has given so much to wants to give something back.”
The organisers said the 5km was a massive success with an unforgettable atmosphere.
“We could not have done it without the wonderful community of friends, family, and supporters who have backed us every step of the way.”
All the funds raised will go directly and securely to IMNDA to support its vital work. The will remain open until October 10th.
