Gardai are carrying out an investigation into the cause of a fire which resulted in two cruisers being gutted, one of which has sunk, in Carrick-on-Shannon on Tuesday night.

According to a statement from Leitrim County Council the fire was reported at around 9.25 p.m. with the fire service on scene at the jetty by 9.30 p.m.. A large blaze had engulfed both cruisers and the fire service battled to contain it and make sure it didn’t spread to nearby vessels. By midnight the fire was under control.

Fortunately there were no injuries reported and it is understood there was no one on board either vessel at the time.

The scene was preserved for a technical examination. Gardai stated that enquiries are ongoing to establish the cause of the fire.

It will now be up to the owners of the cruisers to ensure that both vessels are removed safely from the site while Leitrim County Council will erect a perimeter and contain any environment issues that may arise.
