Hodson Bay waterfront plan submitted
The flagship Hodson Bay project includes the development of a reimagined marina.
Plans for the multi-million euro Hodson Bay Waterfront Park have been submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála, with a decision expected early next year.
Last Friday, the council submitted the application for the €30 million Hodson Bay Waterfront Park, and the plans are scheduled to be available to view from Wednesday, September 2nd 2026, to October 16th 2026, at the Office of An Coimisiún Pleanála, Dublin, and or at Áras an Chontae Roscommon Town, between 9.30 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 3.30 pm Monday to Friday. The application and its accompanying documents may also be viewed/downloaded on the council’s website. A decision on the application is expected by February 18th 2027.
Under the proposal, the existing marina will be doubled in size, the area's paving will be enhanced, and transport measures, such as improving facilities for cycling and walking, will be made. Improvements will also be made to the site's carparking. A new watersports pavilion building and cafe are also part of the project.
If given the greenlight, the proposal, which will be located on 9.0 hectares at Hodson Bay, Barrymore, will see the demolition of the existing water sports building, and adjacent public toilet block, and the temporary relocation of the existing water sports facility during the construction period, which is due to take 21 months. The new pavilion will have a café, as well as an enclosed plaza space.
Furthermore, the existing Waterways Ireland operated marina at Hodson Bay will be expanded to provide a new floating breakwater and an extra 29 berths, resulting in a total capacity of approximately 59 berths for cruisers and visiting watercraft. There will also be a one-storey marina pavilion with toilets and showers, and improved access for canoeing, kayaking and paddle boarding.
A playground, picnic areas, benches, bicycle storage, sauna pods, wellness meadow, and swimming canopy are also planned.
