Horkan family deserves the truth, says Kerrane

The family of murdered Detective Garda Colm Horkan deserves the truth as to the circumstances of his death in June 2020, Roscommon TD Claire Kerrane has said.
Her party's spokesperson on justice, Matt Carthy has written to the Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan following a statement released by Detective Garda Horkan’s family last week.
Speaking on RTÉ The Week in Politics, Deputy Kerrane said the family deserves the truth.
“They are clear that they have many, many questions that remain unanswered and they no longer have confidence in getting answers without a public inquiry,” the Sinn Féin TD said.
“Detective Garda Colm Horkan gave almost his entire life in service to the State, he deserves justice.
“Serious questions have been raised as to the holster Detective Garda Horkan was wearing on June 17th.
“We know protected disclosures were made in relation to these holsters being faulty. This was detailed in a recent RTÉ Investigates programme.
“Members of An Garda Síochána must have confidence that when they raise concerns through protected disclosure mechanisms those concerns will be taken seriously, investigated properly and acted upon where necessary.” Deputy Kerrane said that the public also must have confidence that concerns about Garda safety and operational equipment were dealt with transparently and with urgency.
“Above all else, the Horkan family deserves answers. Six years on from Detective Garda Horkan’s death, they should not still be left seeking basic information regarding the circumstances that led to his killing,” she said.
“The family should not be left years more seeking answers. That would be cruel. The Government must do right by them and right by a distinguished member of An Garda Síochána.”
