A Ukrainian man charged with an assault causing serious harm in the early hours of New Year’s Day, which resulted in the death of a man in Ballaghaderreen, has been further remanded on bail pending DPP directions.
The case of the accused, Yevhen Shutko (46), with an address at Loughglynn, Co Roscommon came before Ballaghaderreen District Court again today, Friday.
The court previously heard that Shutko (46) was claiming self-defence when charged with the alleged assault. His reply when charged in January by Garda Brendan McGrath was, “it was definitely not intentional, I was defending myself”.
Following the alleged assault, the injured party was taken to Sligo University Hospital before being transferred to Beaumont Hospital where he later died.
Shutko was granted bail in January by Judge James Faughnan at Ballaghaderreen District Court when independent surety and bail money amounting to €3,000 were furnished to the court.
Sergeant Mark Mahon, for the state, informed the court today that DPP directions were still awaited and the accused man was further remanded on bail to July 10th.
