Man dies in Frenchpark house explosion

A man has died following an explosion at a house in Frenchpark village on Wednesday evening.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed this morning, Thursday, that the body of a man was removed from the house and has been taken from the scene to University Hospital Galway for a post mortem.

Gardaí said the scene is being technically examined and no further information was available at this time. Enquiries are ongoing.

Yesterday evening, emergency services attended the scene of the blast which led to a fire completely destroying a house in The Oaks estate.

It's understood that two fire brigades extinguished the blaze while gardaí were also at the scene. 

One resident told the Herald that the whole estate "shook" following the explosion, which happened at approximately 7.10 p.m..

There are about 50 houses in The Oaks estate and it's understood extensive damage was also caused to other residents' windows, doors and perimeter walls.
