‘Ming’ on course for a return to Brussels

Castlerea native Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan is still on course for a return to Brussels with the sixth count in the European Elections for the Midlands North West Constituency seeing him lead the way with 79,582 votes.
There are still several days of counting left at the TF Royal Theatre in Castlebar where a total of 700,700 ballot papers had to be gone through by the counting staff for the 15 county constituency, which spans three provinces and has a total electorate of 1,318,189.
‘Ming’ topped the poll on the first count and now after six counts has 79,852 votes, still several thousands of votes away from the 113, 325 quota.
With a 53 % turnout in this constituency, the other contenders for the five seats at this stage are Barry Cowen (FF), 74,237 votes; Nina Carberry (FG), 74349; Maria Walsh (FG), 72, 027 and Ballyleague’s Ciaran Mullooly, (II) 58,396.
