New car registrations for County Roscommon increased for the month of May despite a decrease nationally.

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) recently released registration statistics for May, which reported that a total of 729 new cars were registered in Roscommon in May, an increase of 8 when compared with May of 2023. The number of registrations nationally were down 15% from May 2023.

New car registrations for the county are up when compared to pre-Covid times. In May 2019 a total of 668 cars were registered.

Electric car registrations for the month were down 28%, with 59 new registrations, a decrease of 13 from May 2023. Nationally, new electric car registrations were down 39%, a total 671 less registrations.

This means the electric car market share in Ireland now stands at 13%.

Brian Cooke, SIMI Director General said that that the focus needs to shift to the private consumer for the electric car market: “We need to re-focus our efforts on these buyers, they need greater reassurances, which includes at a minimum the extension of current incentives and delivery on an electric charging infrastructure."
