A new era for second level education in Roscommon Town will dawn in September.

Ahead of a move to co-education status, the former Convent of Mercy Roscommon has formally announced a name change to Mercy College Roscommon.

The school has also announced its change in status from an all-girls school to a co-educational school from the 2025/26 academic year, where it will begin a new chapter as it accepts boys into First Year for the first time since opening in 1929.

“This is indeed a momentous occasion for our school and we look forward to building brighter futures by providing educational opportunities for all students in Roscommon Town and its environs,” said a spokesperson.

Meanwhile, in September CBS Roscommon confirmed that it was also moving from an all-boys secondary school to a co-educational school, starting in September 2025.

The school said it was thrilled to announce that it had received approval from the Department of Education and Skills to transition to co-ed status, starting in September 2025.

The CBS at Abbeytown, Roscommon has been an all-boys schools since it was founded by the Congregation of the Christian Brothers in 1935.
