A petition calling for speed ramps in the village of Trien, Castlerea has been set up.

The petition comes after residents, parents and members of the Community Council raised concerns regarding the speed of traffic through the village.

In recent weeks gardaí from the Roscommon Roads Policing Unit detected a vehicle travelling at 114km/hr in a 50km/hr zone through the village.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor Paschal Fitzmaurice, who set up the petition, said that he had spoken to the area engineer about the problem and the merits of installing ramps.

“I will raise the issue at our next municipal district meeting. If you are in favour of ramps to reduce speed please sign my petition, which will help me to convince the council,” said the councillor.

He suggested that the ramps could be funded under a safety scheme. “A scheme for school safety can also be applied for when it opens under 'safe routes to school' and this must be applied for by the school. I am also looking for ramps in other villages and I will keep pursuing these cases,” he said.

According to Cllr Fitzmaurice “statistics from reputable sources reveal that speed ramps can reduce accidents by up to 40%. In areas like ours, where the safety of pedestrians, especially children, is non-negotiable, this reduction could prevent potential tragedies and enhance the village.”

Backing the petition, Independent Ireland councillor Nigel Dineen said that every signature helps demonstrate the level of local support for improved road safety measures.
