Up to 2,000 people attended a protest on Saturday in Ballinasloe over fears for the future of maternity services at Portiuncula University Hospital, where the HSE was accused of abandoning rural mothers.

People from Galway, Roscommon, Offaly, Clare, Westmeath, Tipperary marched through the town to voice their concerns over the downgrading of services.

A large contingent of Rossies attended the demonstration, including Willie Dolan who was decked in the county colours.
