A picket is being planned over lack of parking at Roscommon University Hospital.

Independent councillor Anthony Waldron says that the long standing problem at the hospital is a serious issue that needs to be resolved.

“It is getting worse and worse. There are cars parked on the footpaths and green areas. People attending the hospital have to go down past the Hyde where they might get parking,” he said.

“I met a lady in a wheelchair being pushed all the way from the Hyde in the rain. And when there is a funeral there is no parking at all.”

Cllr Waldron said that in correspondence with the hospital, the Saolta group had acknowledged the problem. It added that additional car parking space has been included in the hospital’s spatial plan, which is currently being drafted by the hospital in conjunction with HSE Estates.

There was also a meeting with Roscommon County Council and RUH last year where the development of the site and transportation were raised.

He said he is going to organise a picket at the hospital until this matter is addressed.

“It will be organised early in the new year,” he said. “There is ample ground there for it to be facilitated. It is unfair on patients and residents living near the hospital too.”

He added that he will be raising the issue at the next meeting of the Roscommon Access For All group.
