Many other services involving public sector workers are affected, including court sittings. Cases involving urgent domestic violence, childcare and custody issues are among the limited exceptions.

Roscommon County Council offices and libraries are closed today while the industrial action has also forced the closure of Leinster House in Dublin.

Union leaders say a second 24-hour strike is planned for next Wednesday, October 21st if an agreement on pay is not reached.
