Eighties pop icon Paul Young has been talking about enjoying Christmas time in Roscommon with his fiancée Lorna, who hails from Tarmonbarry.

The English singer told Independent.ie that the couple had spent their first “true Irish Christmas together” travelling between Dublin and Roscommon, and cooking for family and friends.

Lorna’s family, the Kellys, hail from Tarmonbarry. She has three other sisters and her mother Mary still resides in the home place. Mary’s husband Mickey Kelly sadly passed away in December 2022.

Local Independent councillor Tom Crosby remembers Mickey, a former Bord na Móna worker, as a lovely neighbour and a man who had a great knowledge of local history.

“The Kellys are a well-regarded family and I have known them all my life,” said Cllr Crosby, who said he had seen the famous singer in Tarmonbarry in recent weeks.

Paul Young was a massive pop star in the eighties, known for a string of hits such as "Love of the Common People", "Wherever I Lay My Hat" and "Every Time You Go Away".

He is due to play three dates in Ireland - Dublin, Cork and Limerick - in 2024.
