Protest outside former nursing home this evening
The protest outside the former Stella Maris nursing home this evening, Thursday.
A protest is being staged this evening, Thursday, outside a former nursing home which has been earmarked for International Protection Applicants (IPAs).
Stella Maris on the Roscommon Road in Baylough, Athlone, is set to accommodate IPAs in the near future.
A Department of Integration spokesperson confirmed to the Roscommon Herald earlier this evening that a new accommodation centre is coming on stream at the building which “will accommodate families seeking international protection”.
The spokesperson said that the former nursing home has capacity for 60 people “and will be ready for new arrivals shortly”.
Stella Maris operated as a nursing home for 35 years but closed in 2022 due to spiralling costs.
