Rates waive urged for new businesses as company seeks to create jobs in County Roscommon

Deputy Claire Kerrane has asked Roscommon County Council to consider a waiver on rates, for the first year, for new businesses setting up in the county.
A new company is hoping to create 10-12 jobs in the Ballaghaderreen area, according to Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane.
Deputy Kerrane has now asked Roscommon County Council to consider a waiver on rates, for the first year, for new businesses setting up in the county.
Deputy Kerrane said that she had been assisting a new company coming to the town. “They hope to create 10-12 jobs, which is the most we have seen in quite a while. Before opening, they received their rates bill from the council. On reaching out to the council, I have asked that it consider affording a waiver on rates for new businesses in their first year,” said Deputy Kerrane.
"Ballaghaderreen is a prime example of a town that would benefit from such a waiver - the town has the highest unemployment rate in the county and so, we should be supporting and incentivising new business - this is one way to do this and give a chance to get up and running,” she suggested.
"There is currently a form of waiver in the first year but only in cases where there is not a similar business within 5km - this is rare, especially in rural towns.
"I would ask that in a time when being in business is so costly, that the council do its bit to give new businesses a chance when starting out. It can do that by waiving rates in the first year of a new business,” she said.
