Renowned Roscommon singer receives international award
Brendan Shine was one of the recipients of the Pride of Erin International Awards in Manchester
South Roscommon's internationally known singing star, Brendan Shine, Gatestown, Taughmaconnell, was one of the recipients of the Pride of Erin International Awards at the Deansgate Hotel, Manchester, on Saturday, June 20th.
The awards recognise unsung heroes in the community who support Irish heritage and they were presented with their awards at a black-tie dinner. They are hosted annually in Manchester and they celebrate "remarkable individuals", community groups, charities and business concerns who have made a significant impact by helping or inspiring others.
Brendan Shine, who is a native of Kielty, Drum, has toured Irish centres and entertainment venues throughout Great Britain for decades and is known to tens of thousands within the Irish community in Britain. The ceremony raises funds annually and awareness for charities like Manchester Mind and the Toy Appeal.
On the gala night, performances are given annually by Irish singers, dancers and artists. Brendan Shine, who is in his late seventies, has had a 60 year long career in the entertainment industry since the mid-sixties and has taken home a number of awards in both Ireland and Britain.
He has also regularly appeared on RTÉ television and hosted a " Shine On" television programme on RTÉ television in the course of his music career. His wife is the former Ms Kathleen Kildea, Gatestown, and they reside in that townland.
