A painting by a Roscommon artist has sold for close to quarter of a million euro.
The painting, Le Loing at Sundown, by Castleplunkett native Roderic O'Conor sold recently at Whyte’s Auction House for an incredible €245,000, well in excess of its estimated value of €150,000 - €200,000.
Born in Milltown in 1860, O'Conor's paintings are hugely popular worldwide with art lovers. The painting depicts the River Loing in France, which O'Conor discovered in the late 1880s when he was a student in Paris.
He spent several summers at nearby Grez-sur-Loing, and O'Conor's fondness for the area was such that he returned several times, including in 1902 when the painting was created.
