Roscommon school pays tribute following death of former principal
The late Paul Costello.
Scoil Mhuire secondary school in Strokestown has paid tribute following the death of its former principal, Paul Costello, who served in the role from 1997 to 2006.
In a message on social media, the school said: “It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of Mr Paul Costello, our former principal.
“Paul served as principal in Scoil Mhuire from 1997 to 2006 and during this time he made a valued and lasting contribution to our school community. With his gentle and caring nature he made a positive impact on his staff and work colleagues, his students and the wider community of Strokestown who had the privilege of knowing and working with him.
“He led with professionalism, kindness, quiet strength, empathy and compassion at all times and exercised authority with a calm presence. As an educator, Paul's philosophy was rooted in the Mercy ethos of inclusive, holistic, Christian education which promotes the overall wellbeing of students as well as academic achievement.
“He was held in very high regard by staff and students, encouraging students to reach their full potential and always being very approachable.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Olive, who also taught at Scoil Mhuire, and to his family, friends, former colleagues and all who are mourning his loss at this difficult time. May his gentle soul rest in peace. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” said the school.
The Limerick native passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on October 11th at University Hospital Limerick.
He will be laid to rest today, Wednesday, at old Mungret Cemetery following Funeral Mass at St. Nessan’s Church in Raheen.
