School loses planning appeal

A South Roscommon school's attempt to overturn a planning refusal to build a car park and a community garden has been turned down.

The Board of Management of Glanduff NS appealed Roscommon County Council's refusal for the development at Carnagh West, Kiltoom to An Coimisiún Pleanála. A decision on the case was made last week when the refusal was upheld.

In October 2024, the school sought permission from the local authority to build a new entrance from the public road, a car park, and a community garden. The council subsequently requested and received further information on the development, and a decision was made on June 30th.

The council said it was not satisfied “that it has been satisfactorily demonstrated that the proposed car parking facilities can operate safely and efficiently and facilitate safe vehicular and active travel movement within the proposed car park”.

In its order An Coimisiún Pleanála said “it is considered that the proposed development would be likely to prejudice the safety and convenience of road users, including school children, and would, therefore, be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area”.
