Several schools in County Roscommon have announced that they will close on Wednesday as the county remains in the grip of an icy blast.

The schools include all three second level schools in Roscommon Town – CBS, Mercy College and Roscommon Community College;  Castlerea Community School; St. Michael's School, Castlerea; St. Anne's NS, Castlerea; Tarmon NS, Castlerea; St. Paul's NS, Castlerea; Abbey Community College, Boyle;  Roosky NS; St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen; St. Attracta's NS, Ballaghaderreen; Loughglynn NS; Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown; Camcloon NS; Elphin Community College; Lanesboro Community College; Lanesboro Primary School; the GRETB Further Education and Training Centre at Lanesboro Street, Roscommon and Frenchpark NS.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange low temperature and ice warnings for 25 counties, including Roscommon.

The first Status Orange warning came into effect from 8 p.m. tonight.

Met Éireann has said extremely cold and widespread severe frost, ice and lying snow could lead to dangerous travelling conditions on roads and underfoot, travel disruption and delays and animal welfare issues in these areas.

It will remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

A second Status Orange warning for all counties with the exception of Donegal will come into effect at 6 p.m. on Wednesday evening and will remain in place until 11 a.m. on Thursday.

A nationwide Status Yellow low temperature and ice warning is currently in place and will be in effect until 6 a.m. on Friday morning.
