Simple steps to protect your home from bursts and leaks during cold weather

Uisce Éireann is reminding households in Roscommon to take a few simple steps to protect their homes ahead of this weekend’s cold snap, thus helping avoid a disrupted water supply and potentially expensive repairs.
A sudden drop in temperature can cause pipes to freeze and burst, especially following periods of heavy rainfall, which may have left the ground unstable or caused damage to pipework inside and outside the house.
By preparing now, homeowners can avoid unnecessary stress and damage during cold snaps.
Practical tips for households include:
*Insulate exposed pipes and tanks in attics, under sinks and in unheated spaces.
*Fix dripping taps and small leaks early to prevent them freezing and blocking pipes.
*Check you know where your stop valve is, so you can turn off the water quickly if needed.
*Keep cold draughts out by sealing gaps around windows, doors and pipe entry points.

“We know how upsetting and disruptive burst pipes can be for families and businesses. Taking just a few simple steps now can make all the difference during a cold snap.
