Sitting councillor John Keogh takes fifth seat in Athlone
FF councillor John Keogh and his supporters celebrate after he was elected on the seventh count in the Athlone Municipal District.
Sitting Fianna Fail councillor John Keogh has been re-elected to Roscommon County Council.
Representing the Athlone Municipal District he was re-elected at around 2 am on the seventh count at the count centre in the Hyde.
Following the transfer of Joe Harney’s 536 votes, the Taughmaconnell politician had 1,442 votes exceeding the quota of 1,403.
He has taken the fifth seat in this six seat area following on from Cllrs Emer Kelly (Ind), John Naughton (FG), Tony Ward (Ind) and Laurence Fallon (Ind) who were elected on Sunday.
This leaves three others in the race for the final seat, Sinn Fein’s Sam Brooks who presently has 987 votes, Fine Gael’s Dominick Naughton on 737 and Fianna Fail’s James Murray on 710.
Counting continues with John Keogh’s surplus of 39 votes.
