The sod has now officially been turned on the new 50-bed replacement unit at the Sacred Heart Hospital.
Yesterday afternoon Minister for Mental Health and Older People Mary Butler visited Roscommon to perform the ceremony. She was joined by local politicians and HSE officials.
Planning Permission for the proposed development was granted in 2023 and since then a tender process for the works has been undertaken.
The project is needed to comply with Hiqa standards and its overall approved budget is €35million.
It is hoped the work could be completed and the facility opened within the next two years.
