Is the secret to eternal youth to be found at Marians of Boyle?

Women in County Roscommon live to an average of 85 years of age and now TV presenter Kathryn Thomas is on a mission to find out why.

In the second part of her documentary, ‘Young Forever: The Death of Aging’, Kathryn pays a visit to the North Roscommon town of Boyle.

Here she speaks with the staff of Marian’s, the well-known boutique, where the average age of the all-female staff is past the national standard retirement age.

The popular TV presenter thinks she might have found the world’s new Blue Zone in Boyle. Regions known as blue zones are areas where people live longer and are far more likely to reach 100. Could Boyle be up there with Okinawa, Japan, Ncoya, Costa Rica, Ikaria, Greece and Sardinia, Italy?

Why do people tend to live longer in some places? It’s a question researchers have been studying for decades. According to studies these areas are not only characterised by unusually large numbers of elderly people, but also by the exceptional health and vigour many of them retain into advanced age.

Maybe Boyle has the answer to the forever young search. Find out why in the in the programme, which airs on RTÉ One on Monday night. Click on the link below to get a sneak preview.
