Westport to Athlone rail line reopens following tragic death of 12-year-old boy

The rail line between Westport and Athlone has reopened following a collision between a train and car at a level crossing near Ballyhaunis on Thursday evening.
The 14:45hrs Heuston to Westport service on Friday afternoon is expected to be the first to operate through since the line reopened just after 4 p.m..
Knock on delays are still expected on services on both the Westport and Galway lines while Irish Rail works to restore regular operations.
Thursday’s 6.15 p.m. service from Dublin’s Heuston station to Westport was travelling westbound when it struck the vehicle, resulting in the death of a 12-year-old boy.
The driver of the car, a male in his late 40s, was taken from the scene by ambulance for hospital treatment. His injuries are not life-threatening.
Mary Considine, Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann, expressed her sincerest sympathies to the family of the young boy who tragically lost his life.
“Incidents like these are extremely difficult for all involved.
“Our thoughts remain with the family, friends and wider community in Ballyhaunis and with everyone affected by this tragic incident.
“I would also like to convey my sincere appreciation to all those who responded with such professionalism and care at the scene, both the emergency services, An Garda Síochána and our own staff.
“A full investigation into the incident is underway and further details will become clear as the investigation continues.
“We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our customers at this time,” she said.
