Castlerea Community School prepare for Regional League Final
The Castlerea Community School's boy's U-19 team will play Sligo Grammar School in the North-West Region B Final this Thursday.
The Castlerea CS U-19 boys basketball team face Sligo Grammar School in the North-West Region B Final on Thursday at 12.15 p.m.. Having won the competition last year, CCS will host the final in Castlerea Enterprise Hub.
The team were down some key players in the opening group game. Short-handed, Castlerea fell short by just one point away to Gortnor Abbey.
A 13-point victory at home against Carrick-on-Shannon CS in the following group game was enough to see Castlerea top the group on score difference. A semi-final win over neighbours St. Nathy’s secured a place in the final for CCS.
The boys had beaten St. Nathy’s a few weeks prior, in the BI Schools Cup, but were left disappointed in the next round, losing out away to St. Flannan’s, Ennis.
Their advancement to this Thursday’s Regional league final also qualifies them for national playoffs in January.
In club basketball, the Castlerea Cavaliers men’s team have had a solid start to their 2025-26 LLR league campaign.
The Cavs men carried momentum into the season having won the Longford Phoenix pre-season tournament at the end of September. With five away games to open the league season, Castlerea have done as well as they could have expected.

An opening win away in Carrick on Shannon against the Cougars was undone by two losses in a row, away in Castlebar against Mayo Meteors and in Sligo against the Atlantic Eagles.
Strong wins since then against Longford Phoenix and Ballyhaunis Bears leave the Cavs men with a winning record, 3-2, going into the Christmas break.
The Cavs women’s team returned to LLR action following a season’s absence from competition. It’s proved to be a difficult return with the team yet to secure a win in four games.
They will look to get a win on the board in their last game before Christmas on Saturday against Sligo All Stars.
