Community Games basketball finals hit by lowest entry in years

The U-13 boys' basketball team from Castlerea, alongside their manager Joe Henry, that were crowned county champions at the Community Games finals in Castlerea.
The second event on the 2025 Community Games calendar saw Castlerea Community Games host the basketball competitions in Castlerea Community School. The entry for all age groups was the lowest seen in many years, with just 11 teams participating across the various competitions.
The U-11 mixed age group had just three entries. Kiltoom/Cam were too good for Aughrim/Kilmore in their semi-final. In the final, they faced Kiltullagh who received a bye to the decider following the withdrawal of Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober.
Both teams’ ability to hit baskets were in evidence in the final, but it was Kiltoom/Cam who took the county title on a 21-13 scoreline to book their place in the Connacht finals.
The U-13 girls’ age group was a straight final between Aughrim/Kimore and Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober following the withdrawal of Kiltullagh. It was a low scoring game that saw Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober emerge victorious on a 10-7 scoreline.
The U-13 boys saw Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober, Kiltullagh and Castlerea taking to the court in their bid to win silverware for their areas following the withdrawal of Roscommon/Kilteevan.
Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober progressed to the final following a 18-14 victory against Kiltullagh. However, they came up against a well-coached Castlerea team in the final who secured a 32-9 victory to confirm their status as County Roscommon’s representatives at the Connacht finals.
The U-16 girls’ age group was a straight final between Castlerea and Roscommon/Kilteevan. A very strong group of girls from Roscommon/Kilteevan dominated the game and recorded a comfortable 42-19 victory to book their berth in the Connacht Community Games basketball finals.
There was no competition in the U-16 boys’ age group following the withdrawal of the Roscommon/Kilteevan team. Consequently, Castlerea will represent County Roscommon at the Connacht finals.
The winning teams from Castlerea, Croghan/Drumlion/Cortober, Kiltoom/Cam and Roscommon/Kilteevan will represent Roscommon in the Connacht finals on April 26th. The finals will be hosted by County Galway in Tuam.
