County Roscommon sisters set their sights on World Boxing Championship medals

Castlerea sisters, Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke, will be eyeing up World Boxing Championship medals when they enter the ring in Serbia on Thursday evening.

Lisa secured a victory in the last 16 on Wednesday evening, after stopping her opponent from Azerbaijan, Emili Rzayeva, in the second round.

Lisa, who was world champion in 2022, will be meet third seed in the 70kg division, Saida Lahmidi from Morocco, in the ninth bout of this evening’s schedule in Serbia.

Approximately half an hour later, her sister and double Olympian, Aoife, enters the ring, having received a bye into the quarter-finals.

She will fight Aziza Zokirova from Uzbekistan in the 75kg division where she has been so successful at European level.

The Tarmon sisters are expected in the ring between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m..

With so much at stake, it has the potential to be a historic evening in the sporting annals of the county.
