One of the more eyecatching results from Friday evening’s senior football championship action was Michael Glaveys’ 1-20 to 2-15 victory against Western Gaels in Frenchpark.

Relegated from the O’Rourke Cup after ten defeats and a walkover, Glaveys appeared to be in bother.

But, with the aid of their band of brothers, they circled the wagons and paid the ultimate tribute to their former player, Stephen Cannon — who passed away earlier this year — with a terrific victory.

That triumph was spearheaded by the Heneghan brothers — goalkeeper Cormac (making his adult championship debut), Niall, Cathal and Darragh, the latter introduced as a substitute at half time and making a huge impact by kicking 1-1.

Their father James is a member of the management team, while cousin Robert wore the number 14 jersey and kicked three points.

Another two sets of brothers were also part of the Glaveys panel.

Conor, Luke and Dylan Ruane were on the starting 15, while Seán Brehony was wing-back. Seán brother Stephen was also part of the match-day squad.

Given the pride the band of brothers, and their team-mates showed in the jersey on Friday evening, dare we have doubted a team that came within a kick of a ball of reaching last year’s county final?
