Clonfert College win 3-2 on penalties
What a way to get off the mark?
Clonfert College secured the first provincial title in the school’s fledgling history as they were crowned Connacht Senior C hurling champions as they overcame Roscommon CBS following a penalty shootout.
These teams were remarkably well matched as the two sides were forced to go to sudden death penalties after they were level at 1-1 following their opening five attempts.
In the end, Clonfert College held their nerve to secure their first trophy since the school opened its doors in September 2025.
The defeat was a bitter pill for Roscommon CBS to swallow as their brave effort to end a 10 year wait to be crowned Connacht Senior C hurling champions came up just short.
The Roscommon side led this contest 0-11 to 0-7 at half time in normal time after playing with the elements.
They enjoyed a fast start, racing 0-7 to 0-1 after two neat Cathal Nerney scores but Clonfert College fought back despite a smart Evan Murray save.
Colm Fitzgerald’s placed balls helped his side lead at the interval. As weather conditions deteriorated, scores dried up.
But, Clonfert College were boosted by a Ciaran O Tuairisc goal that tied the game at 1-9 to 0-12. Even though Ronan Carr hit straight back with a major, Clonfert College showed their grit to strike the final three points of the game to send this contest to extra time.
The sides could still not be separated after those 20 minutes. The drama reached a crescendo in the shootout but ultimately, Daniel Mooney's scuccessful penalty ensured Clonfert College secured their first Connacht title in the most dramatic way possible.
An All Ireland semi final with Tipperary’s St. Joseph’s Borrisoleigh awaits.
