Roscommon CBS beat reigning Connacht champions
Sam Hannon impressed as Roscommon CBS secured a notable win over St. Colman's Claremorris in the Connacht PPS Senior A Championship
Roscommon CBS held their nerve to start their Connacht Post Primary Schools Senior A campaign with a hard fought 1-13 to 0-12 win over St. Colman’s Claremorris.
The win was just rewards for a gritty display as they overcame the reigning provincial champions, who last season progressed through to the Hogan Cup final.
With home advantage, St. Colman’s started with intent, but they struggled for accuracy as the Roscommon CBS defence made numerous important stops.
Last season’s All Ireland Senior B champions were far more economical as a pair of Sam Hannon scores alongside efforts from Christian Donlon and Seamus Hussey propelled them in front.
The Mayo side began to get a grip around midfield as they struck over four points in a row including fine efforts from Cathal Tierney and Dara Flanagan.
But Hannon converted a free to give Roscommon CBS a slender half time lead.
The third quarter was tit for tat as Donlon, Hannon and Adam Killian continued to cause problems while the former almost raided for a goal.
Tom Biesty found the all important three-pointer to propel his side five in front.
Back came the reigning Connacht Senior A champions as Evan Flanagan landed a two-pointer to lead the surge.
But Roscommon CBS showed their mettle as Colin Murray, Hannon and Donlon found the target.
Donlon almost found the net late on, but play was brought back for a penalty that was saved. However, by then Noel Moran and Eoghan Coll’s men had done enough.
Roscommon CBS will face Rice College in their final group game next Wednesday at 12.30 p.m. on home soil.
