Roscommon intermediate ladies’ footballers on the cusp of promotion

Kate Nolan scored Roscommon's crucial goal against Wexford this afternoon.

The Roscommon intermediate ladies’ football team are on the cusp of promotion to Division Two of the Lidl LGFA League after a 1-10 to 0-8 victory against Wexford at Orchard Park, Elphin, this afternoon.

While Ollie Lennon’s side are not mathematically certain of promotion, it would take a surreal sequence of results to deny the “Primrose and Blue” a place in the league final following Down’s victory against Offaly.

Four Laura Fleming frees alongside an Aisling Hanly point left Roscommon 0-5 to 0-3 ahead at half time, although goalkeeper Helena Cummins made a couple of outstanding saves to keep her side's noses in front.

With the game tied at 0-7 apiece, Roscommon dug deep with crucial scores from Judy McDermott and the excellent Rachel Fitzmaurice alongside Kate Nolan’s 55th minute goal to run out winners.

Roscommon are at home to Offaly on St. Patrick’s Day and are away to Antrim, who picked up their first win of the season against Sligo on Sunday, in their final round of games.

A win in either match will confirm promotion.
